The 18th-ranked UNLV baseball team led the way Tuesday in the announcement of the 2003 Mountain West Conference all-conference teams and postseason awards as selected by the league's head coaches.
UNLV first baseman Fernando Valenzuela earned player of the year honors, the first conference MVP award for the Rebels since Matt Williams was honored in 1986. Valenzuela's skipper, Jim Schlossnagle, was selected as coach of the year, the first such honor UNLV baseball history.
The regular-season champion Rebels headlined this year's all-conference squad with seven selections overall, including four first-team honorees.
