Letter: Looking for explanations
Wednesday, May 21, 2003 | 8:43 a.m.
Will someone out there explain to me how spending billions to destroy a half-ravaged country -- looking for elusive, if not non-existent weapons of mass destruction and nuclear capability, so that billions more can be spent to rebuild it by Halliburton, Bechtel, Fluor, etc. -- is not deficit spending, but spending money on health care, education and environmental protection is deficit spending and needs to be curbed?
I don't understand how tax windfalls for the wealthiest among us will restore our economy, decrease unemployment and provide prescription relief, especially for the elderly and disabled. I don't understand how Reagan's trickle-down theories are going to work now when they didn't work then.
I don't understand how plunging our country into the worst debt in decades, that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will be paying for, is good for America.
Someone please explain this to me.
