United Blood Services seeks donors
Tuesday, May 20, 2003 | 9:16 a.m.
United Blood Services is asking for increased blood donations before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
"This is the first major holiday of the summer and that's when accidents and traumas start to increase," said Steve Chitren, UBS associate executive director.
United Blood Services will remain open on Memorial Day, Chitren said.
Earlier this year the University Medical Center Trauma Unit had to cancel elective surgeries due to a low blood supply.
The blood collection service has had to import almost 7,000 units of blood in 2003.
In 2002 United Blood Services declared eight critical and emergency shortages due to lack of available blood.
To encourage donors, who must be 17 or older and heavier than 110 pounds, United Blood Services is offering drawings for special incentives.
Among the prizes are spa treatments for two; a pair of tickets to the Spiritfest 2003 concert series; Krispy Kreme doughnut coupons; and as a grand prize a two-night stay, dinner for two and a spa treatment at the Palms.
Donors can call 233-9620 to make an appointment. Questions regarding eligibility can be answered by calling 228-4483 and asking for a blood donation supervisor.
