$873.3 mil. county budget passes
Tuesday, May 20, 2003 | 8:59 a.m.
Without any public protest, the Clark County Commission passed an $873.3 million budget for the coming fiscal year, a 7 percent increase over this year's general fund budget.
County Finance Director George Steven told the commissioners, who approved the budget 7-0, that the budget approved Monday represented the "status quo," without property tax hikes or increased fees for services for the general fund.
The budget includes an increase of 3 cents per $100,000 of property value to a fund to provide indigent medical services, which does not benefit the general fund but would go to the financially ailing county-run health system. Last year's budget was $819.1 million. The budget includes $15 million for the fiscally troubled University Medical Center, much of which will go toward a new computer system designed to increase collections from patients.
The budget also includes a $32.5 million, or a 10.2 percent increase, in the county's contributions to the Metro Police to $351.8 million.
