Slot machine plan fails

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A plan to put slot machines at Canterbury Park skidded to a stop Friday when Senate Democrats conceded that the budget would be balanced without raising taxes.
"I think it's off the table," House Speaker Steve Sviggum said.
That's because while Senate DFLers agreed to add three votes to Senate Republicans' to pass the budget bills, they won't support expanding gambling outside of those casinos run by the state's Indian tribes.
Supporters had estimated the so-called "racino" eventually would earn the state about $150 million every two years.
