Pinjuv helps Gorman sweep 4A golf crowns
Thursday, May 15, 2003 | 9:55 a.m.
It was a clean sweep of the 4A State boys' and girls' golf tournaments for Bishop Gorman.
Sophomore Johnny Pinjuv surprised by outdoing his more experienced teammates to win the individual title at 4-over 148, holding off three golfers two strokes back. Matt Kinsinger of Galena (76-74), Jeremy Meeter of Mojave (80-70) and Dustin Borum of Basic (73-77) carded two-day scores of 6-over 150. Matt Edwards of Coronado (72-79) finished fifth at 7-over 151.
Pinjuv followed Tuesday's 71 with a 5-over 77, the highest-scoring mark of the day for the Gaels, who shined at Red Hawk Golf Club in Sparks.
The Gaels (761) lapped the field, recording a 19-stroke victory over runner-up Palo Verde (780). Robert Massi (72) and Jonathan Taruc (75) recovered from shaky Tuesday showings, and Garrett Logan (73) and Tyler Hairston (76) also played well for the Gaels.
Gorman came into the final round trailing Green Valley by a stroke, but no one came close to the Gaels Wednesday. Galena finished third with a two-day total of 782, and the Gators struggled to a fourth-place finish at 792. Bonanza (794) and Coronado (795) came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Bishop Gorman girls' team won the 4A title in the fall.
