On Monday the Assembly Government Affairs Committee, in a 12-1 vote, recommended passage of Senate legislation that would restrict developer Jim Rhodes' plans to build 5,500 homes on Blue Diamond Hill near the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. We believe the entire Assembly should quickly pass the bill and deliver it to Gov. Kenny Guinn for his signature.
The bill effectively would limit to about 1,400 the number of homes that Rhodes could build on the roughly 2,500 acres he owns. The best option, however, would be for Rhodes to sell his land to the federal government, which in turn would prevent incompatible development so close to a national conservation area. While Rhodes has said he's not interested in selling the land to the government, we hope he changes his mind.
