Scaled-down plan approved

A scaled-down version of a timeshare development at the Showcase Mall on the Las Vegas Strip has received final approval by the Clark County Planning Commission.
Westgate Resorts plans to build a 42-story, 492-unit timeshare resort adjacent to the mall, near its parking garage.
Initially, Orlando, Fla.-based Westgate proposed a 54-story, 750-unit tower and scaled that back to 43 stories and 688 units when that was opposed by MGM MIRAGE, whose MGM Grand hotel-casino is just south of the site.
Westgate President David Siegel further reduced the plan to the point where it no longer needed waivers for sidewalk setbacks and other issues raised by opponents.
The Planning Commission last week approved the project. It will not require County Commission action.
MGM MIRAGE has announced a joint venture with condominium developer Turnberry Associates on property formerly used by the MGM Grand for a theme park.
