The Las Vegas-based Joint Association of Boxers announced today that it has reached an affiliation agreement with the Teamsters Union and will attempt to organize professional fighters and promoters. The union seeks to provide health insurance and pension benefits for boxers.
Former world champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, who organized JAB, said fighters will be asked to contribute 2 percent of their purses to a fund to be overseen by the Teamsters.
"Somebody had to step forward and get this started," Muhammad said today.
