Discounts planned at 70 Vegas hotels

Las Vegas resorts will offer 20 percent discounts on room rates for military personnel in a promotion designed to capitalize on the return of troops from overseas.

"Operation Welcome Home: Vegas Salutes the Military" is being called the first destination-wide effort to thank armed forces.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which is coordinating the effort, said 70 hotels are participating in the program. Active military personnel and their spouses and children must present a valid military identification card to get discounts, which may be restricted by availability and blackout dates. Military discounts are being offered between Armed Forces Day, May 17, and Independence Day, July 4.

Las Vegas hotels routinely offer discounted rates to large groups in conventions, to senior citizens and to travel club members. Some have offered military discounts independently.
