Junior Olympic boxing scheduled
The Henderson Police Athletic League will host the Western Regional Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club, 401 Drake St., Henderson.
More than 100 athletes between 12 and 16 from Southern California and Nevada will compete in about 50 different bouts. Winners will advance to the National Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament in July.
Admission is $5; children under 12 are free with parent. Proceeds benefit the Police Athletic League and the Boys & Girls Club.

Hard Hat Drive helps kidney patients
The Nevada Carpenters Union and the National Kidney Foundation of Nevada will host the fifth annual Carpenters for Kidneys Hard Hat Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at various intersections throughout the valley.
Funds collected support the Patient Services Program and go toward transplants, dialysis, medications, transportation and other expenses for kidney patients. Call 234-7003.
Las Vegans to get preservation awards
Las Vegas residents Stanton Rolf and John Jamrog will each receive a Historic Preservation Award from the State Historic Preservation Office on May 18 in Virginia City for their efforts to preserve Sloan Canyon south of Las Vegas.
Sloan Canyon contains petroglyphs thousands of years old.
Rolf is also recognized for his service to Southern Nevada cultural resources as a Bureau of Land Management district archaeologist.
They are two of 12 Nevadans being recognized for preservation efforts.
Girls Day on tap Saturday at Lied
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas hosts the 22nd annual Girls Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road.
Admission is a $40 tax-deductible donation to support disadvantaged youth. There will be games, a raffle and a barbecue lunch. Each girl will go home with a Goodie Bag. 367-2582.
Learn tea etiquette from Queen Victoria
Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center of Excellence, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Suite No. 330, will host a Mother's Day tea from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Siena Campus Healing Garden.
The event will include a Queen Victoria impersonator, who will teach tea etiquette while a variety of teas and desserts are being served.
Tickets are $20.

Silent auction will help soccer foundation
The Las Vegas Soccer Foundation will host a silent auction from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Mariposa Restaurant in Neiman Marcus at the Fashion Show mall.
Funds raised will go to provide free soccer programs to the valley's youths and establish scholarships for youths who are active in Las Vegas soccer programs.
Admission is $50.
Volunteer carpenter sought for Lake Mead
The National Park Service is seeking a volunteer to work in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area carpenter shop in Boulder City. The shop is a fully equipped, industrial, woodworking facility.

Robert Taylor Elementary School
will host a Cactus Blossom Festival from 10 a.m. to noon in its Desert Botanical Teaching Garden and Tortoise Habitat, 144 Westminster Way, Henderson. The Dick Geuder Jazz Quartet will perform and hot dogs and drinks will be served. Admission is free. 799-8984.
The eighth annual
Southern Nevada Enterprise Community Job Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Vons supermarket, Magic Westland Plaza parking lot at West Owens Avenue and H Street. Admission is free. 455-5025.
