Nevada Guard police unit arrives in Kuwait

Members of the Nevada Army National Guard's 72nd Military Police Co., specially trained in handling enemy prisoners of war, have arrived in Kuwait and may move on to Baghdad, according to their operations officer, Maj. Jeff Mark.

The 110 members of the unit, which had been training at Fort Lewis, Wash., before being deployed Tuesday, have been trained to set up and operate prisoner of war camps, Mark said. Their exact assignment for this mission has not yet been released, Mark said.

"They know how to set up the camps, process prisoners and provide support to the military police," Mark said.

Since the start of the war with Iraq, more than 2,000 members of active and reserve military units stationed in Nevada have been deployed to that region. About 150 military personnel returned last week via flights into Nellis Air Force Base, as well as on commercial airlines.
