Las Vegas is a finalist in the U.S. Conference of Mayors' 24th annual Livability Awards contest.
The contest, also sponsored by Waste Management, honors cities in two population categories for developing an outstanding or innovative program the municipality has started that enhances the quality of life in an urban area.
Las Vegas is a finalist in the over 100,000 population category. The city's submission was The Downtown Centennial Plan, which was adopted in 2000 and is a long-term strategy to establish the area as a premier cultural, civic, financial and business center.
The plan establishes overall development principles for the area and urban design standards for future projects.
Award winners will be announced in June at the 71st annual Conference of Mayors in Denver.
