Parents protest another change in schedules at two schools

Parents of students at Treem and Thorpe elementary schools are protesting a proposal to switch the two campuses from a modified nine-month schedule to a year-round program.

If the proposal moves forward, it would be the third schedule change for the schools in the past seven years, said Cathy Rosenfield, whose son is a fourth grader at Treem Elementary School.

A small group of parents held an impromptu protest Thursday outside the schools, which share a campus on Patrick Lane in Henderson.

"It's incredibly frustrating to keep switching back and forth," said Rosenfield, whose son moved from a year-round to a modified track-five schedule just two years ago. "I wish they would just pick a schedule and stick to it."

Edward Goldman, superintendent of the Clark County School District's southeast region, said the proposed schedule change is on hold at least until today when district officials planned to meet with parents. Both campuses are already overcrowded and switching to the 12-month schedule would free up class space, Goldman said.

However, if an alternative solution can be found -- such as portable classrooms -- plans to change the schedule may be scrapped, Goldman said.
