Senate confirms Winget as marshal

The Senate Tuesday unanimously approved Richard Winget, former Clark County undersheriff, as the next U.S. marshal for Nevada.

President Bush nominated Winget on the recommendation of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

"At this time in our country's history, it's good to know that a man of Dick Winget's character and ability will be in such an important position," Ensign said.

Winget's nomination was also supported by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"Homeland security is at the top of all of our concerns right now," Reid said. "Dick Winget is a proven law enforcement official who has devoted his career to keeping the public safe. He is a fine man who will bring that sense of public service to his new role as a U.S. marshal."

The U.S. marshal's duties include supervising the protection of federal judges and witnesses in federal trials as well as coordinating communication between federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Winget has served in law enforcement in Southern Nevada since 1973 and was undersheriff from 1995 to 2002. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police.
