Letter: War protesters concerned about America’s image

I am in shock and awe at those who continually insist that war protesters have either no respect for the troops fighting or simply a desire to bash a country that allows us our freedom. I count myself among the war protesters and feel that it is my belief in America that fuels my desire to protest.

Those in favor of the war claim that they are supporting America, our troops and the freedom of the Iraqi people. What they fail to see is that this "operation" is causing irreconcilable damage to the image of America throughout the world, which is destroying the very thing the public is told we are fighting for.

Perhaps, those keen on shouting profanities at war protesters feel that America should not be concerned with its image. However, aren't these the same people who responded to the events of Sept. 11 with the question of how anyone could hate America so much?

If one takes the time to reflect upon what America is currently doing and has already done in the world, then the cause of terrorism against the United States becomes clearer. It's not Saddam Hussein, but our own policies that pose the greatest threat to our safety.

We are currently invading a country, giving the message to the rest of the world that we can and will do whatever we want. We have given the message that although we insist that international law be applied to other countries, it shouldn't apply to us. The intelligent and logical people of this world view this as an act of arrogance and control, regardless of any intention on America's part to help or liberate Iraqis.
