Racetrack video lottery plan dropped

TRENTON, N.J. -- The McGreevey administration has decided against a proposal to install video lottery machines at racetracks and other locations, according to a state official.
Eric Shuffler, a counselor to the governor, said that while the terminals were something the state would continue to study, they would not be considered as a revenue source for the 2004 state budget.
"There are simply too many economic, legal and policy issues that need to be resolved before this can be legitimately debated by the state," Shuffler told The Press of Atlantic City for today's editions. He said the eight-member state commission studying the terminals, known as VLT's, "needs to operate without the pressure of people trying to get answers quickly."
