Letter: Congress, press perpetrate lies about Iraq war
Tuesday, March 25, 2003 | 8:47 a.m.
Let me begin by saying that I support our troops, so much so that I spend every moment worrying about their safety. Now, as a local peace activist, I'd like to address the claim that there was a debate over war against Iraq and Bush won; therefore we should now unquestioningly support him.
First, this country had no debate, as Congress refused to fulfill its Constitutional duty to publicly scrutinize the Bush administration's argument for war. Second, the administration lost the war debate in the United Nations due to the fact that every piece of evidence it used to support preemptively attacking Iraq was proven to be an exaggeration or a lie.
If Congress and the press would have done their duty to inform citizens of these facts, 42 percent of the public wouldn't falsely believe that Saddam orchestrated 9-11 and American soldiers and Iraqi civilians wouldn't be dying right now.
