Resolution subdues mood of legislators

Friday, March 21, 2003 | 10:03 a.m.

A resolution expressing support for American military troops cast a somber mood over state lawmakers Thursday.

Assembly Concurrent Resolution 8, sponsored by Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, was worded to show support for troops, despite any questions the state's leaders may have with the war.

The resolution states: "That the members of the Nevada Legislature join with all Nevadans in laying aside debates about the prudence of the cause in which our country is engaged and pray that this conflict may speedily end and that these brave men and women may return safely home to their families and friends."

Giunchigliani said: "We pray for peace and we pray for everyone to come home safely."

Assemblyman Walter Andonov, R-Henderson, a retired Army captain, said he knows firsthand what the troops are experiencing and that the resolution will give them support.

But despite unanimous support for the measure, it was held by the Senate after Sen. Mike McGinness, R-Fallon, complained that it did not contain a reference to Fallon Naval Air Station, where the majority of the Navy pilots trained in the last year.

Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, who co-sponsored the measure, said that while patriotic Americans can disagree with the merits of engagement, all should support the troops.

"For now, we must postpone our debate on the wisdom of the administration's actions for a moment to thank, commend, honor and pray for the noble, selfless and heroic American servicemen and women who are in harm's way even as we speak," Titus said.
