Committees to review actions of campus cops

The state Board of Regents agreed Wednesday to form a committee to review police misconduct at university system institutions.

The action stems from problems a few years ago, such as a controversial police raid of University of Nevada, Las Vegas dormitories March 9, 2000, and the dismissal of two UNLV officers who were accused of padding their time cards.

The Council of Professional Police Standards will establish a permanent review system to look over allegations of misconduct made against police officers at university system institutions, the regents decided.

The call to create the police review council was approved by the board 11-1, with Regent Doug Hill dissenting.

Each institution will set up its own council made up of student council representatives, community members, administrative personnel and faculty.
