Letter: We can’t sit and wait to be hit by aggressor
Wednesday, March 19, 2003 | 9:04 a.m.
I must reply, with one final comment, to letter writer Ted Hall's March 12 "tongue-in-cheek" agreement with my March 8 letter in which we both agreed that one nation will use any means at its disposal against any other nation if it feels that it is necessary to do so.
Mr. Hall correctly mentioned that I did not state the fact that we were (and thus far have been) the only nation to use nuclear weapons against another. True! However, the fact remains that while it did cause multiple casualties at both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in the long run it saved many lives -- American and the enemy. Had the war dragged on for many more years -- the Japanese holding out against all odds -- who could have counted the casualties?
Yes, Mr. Hall, I am hoping and praying for peace -- though praying might not now be politically correct. I hope war can be averted, but not at the expense of attacks by a foreign aggressor on our very own soil if we wait too long -- or worse yet, losing all of our liberties.
