Prostitution laws are removed

Henderson's prostitution laws were wiped away by the City Council on Tuesday, but the move doesn't legalize the world's oldest profession in the city.

State law keeps prostitution illegal in Henderson. It also made the city laws unnecessary.

Ronald Sailon, an assistant city attorney, has said the city has an ongoing practice of working to remove unnecessary laws from the city code book.

Murals to adorn walls of Sprint

Five large outdoor murals soon will decorate the side of a downtown Henderson business with images from the city's past, a city official said.

The Henderson City Council on Tuesday approved a $50,000 contract with hometown artist Robert Beckman for the five murals that will hang from the Sprint building at the intersection of Water Street and Pacific Avenue. The murals would be about 9-by-22 feet and would be placed side by side on the Pacific Avenue side of the building.

City Redevelopment Manager Robert Ryan said Beckman will probably have conceptual drawings of the murals for city officials to review within six weeks. All five murals could be up in four months, and at least one or two murals finished by May 11, the end of the city's 50 days of celebrating its 50th anniversary as a city.

Beckmann, the only artist considered for the job, said he has painted about 300 murals.
