VegasBeat — Timothy McDarrah: Ice bags some cool amenities

You know that hard rubber flooring under the monkey bars at most playgrounds?

Well, a new Vegas nightclub is going to use the same material on the dance floor to ease the impact on the knees and hips of dancing customers.

The new club, to be called Ice, seems to have a lot of good ideas.

Located on Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane, where the club Drink and Eat, Too used to be, Ice's best idea is to triple-soundproof the doors and walls so it will avoid some of the community backlash that helped shutter Drink.

Michael Morton is the club's landlord, but is not involved in its operation. Derek Silberstein and Michael Fuller are the point men.

They are also going to have an LED display in front of the club that will change every month or so. The display is a throwback to the old New York club AREA, which was famous for changing its entire decor each month.

But perhaps Ice's best idea is its goal of having customers regard the club as the "Nordstrom of Nightlife," as Fuller put it.

Nordstrom, of course, is revered by its patrons and the envy of the retail world for its fanatic devotion to customer service.

Customer service at an exclusive nightclub? Seems like an oxymoron, but Fuller and friends are determined to pull it off.

They are aiming for a late May opening.

More details to come.

We hear that much of Democratic Carson City -- specifically, those Democrats in the state Legislature -- is coming to the $2,500 per-person fund-raiser Sig Rogich is tossing for Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman at Le Cirque inside Bellagio on Tuesday.

Ed McMahon and The Orleans have entered into a new business partnership.

The new entity is called BestBet Media Group.

McMahon's first act on behalf of the new venture will be presiding over MegaBingo's $1 million competition at the hotel on April 16.

"I am excited about the prospect of this new opportunity to provide people with affordable entertainment and make new dreams come true," McMahon said.

The saddest classified ad in the Las Vegas Sun last week was in the For Sale section.

"Brand new wedding dress. Never been worn/altered. Size 3-4. $650. Still in bag w/package."

Of all the St. Patrick's Day events taking place Monday, one that caught our attention is the greening of the canal at The Venetian.

Leprechauns will make the water turn color at 11 a.m.

But what is the big deal here? When I was growing up in New York City, the rivers were always green. And there was the occasional corpse that came floating along.

Other St. Patrick's Day items to note: Chinois in the Forum Shops at Caesars is serving a special Green Dragon Martini and Mark DiMartino opens the Tilted Kilt inside The Rio.

Also, it was announced Friday that the pub Nine Fine Irishmen will officially open at New York-New York in July. Acclaimed Irish Chef (Really! He has cooked for Queen Elizabeth) Kevin Dundon flew in from the motherland to draw the first pint of Guinness at Friday's event.

VegasBeat hears that state Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno., is getting remarried. His first wife, Dorothy, known as Dottie, died in 1998.

The powerful 76-year-old pol, who had been trying to keep the nuptial news under wraps, didn't return a couple of phone messages left at his Carson City office.

It might not have been exactly the kind of publicity that Caesars Palace is looking for, but it was pretty funny nevertheless.

On Howard Stern's radio show last week, he read most of the latest Time magazine article about Celine Dion's new Vegas show, "A New Day."

He paused from time to time and interject his typically crude comments. Stern also offered a few X-rated suggestions for Colosseum shows on Dion's dark evenings.

The radio bad boy also said that, when he is in Vegas next month for a series of radio broadcasts, he might actually go to see "A New Day."

As soon as he said that, Caesars probably distributed his photo to security.
