Town eyes Indian casino

BOTKINS, Ohio -- The Village Council voted to buy 82 acres of land for a possible Indian casino although council members do not know how they'll pay for it, and the property owner has threatened to sue the village.
The developer has said the casino and bingo hall would anchor an entertainment site to include restaurants, a hotel and a golf course.
The development of a casino has "weighed heavily on our minds the past months," Councilman Keith Maurer said. "Most of the negative input has been on the gambling issue and not the development issue as a whole."
Owner Jane Pohlman of Sidney has threatened to sue because she thought the land would be used for an industrial park. Attorneys for J&J Pohlman Ltd. did not attend the Tuesday night meeting, when the six-member council voted unanimously to exercise an option to buy the tract for about $740,000.
"This is somewhat like a marriage; it's not completed," said Terry Casey, a Columbus consultant representing the developer, National Capital I. "But at least the village has agreed to move to the next stage, as in an engagement, to explore the details of having the project commence."
