Moore wins Toyota Men’s Collegiate

Monday, March 10, 2003 | 8:48 a.m.

Beginning the day five strokes out of the lead, UNLV All-American Ryan Moore carded a 5-under par 67 to win the Toyota Men's Collegiate Championship individual title by one stroke at Southern Highlands Golf Club Sunday.

Moore (71-70-67--208), of Puyallup, Wash., held on to the lead on his home course, outlasting Alabama's Lars Brovold, TCU's Adam Rubinson, Clemson's D.J. Trahan and North Carolina State's Justin Walters, who finished tied for second place at 7-under par.

Although not his first victory as an amateur, the win does mark the Rebel sophomore's first collegiate title. Moore won the U.S. Amateur Public Links last summer, earning an invitation to The Masters in April.

Moore's heroics weren't enough to catapult the Rebels to the team crown. UNLV held down second place wire-to-wire, but it was Oklahoma State and not Texas which sat above it after Sunday's final round at the par-72, 7,381-yard Southern Highlands. The Cowboys shot 7-under par and climbed from eighth place to the tournament crown. UNLV followed by a single stroke at 7-under for the tourney.

Texas, which led after each of the first two rounds of play, slipped into a tie with top-ranked Clemson for third place at 6-under.

UNLV senior Brien Davis and sophomore Travis Whisman joined Moore in the top 10. Davis (69-69-73--211), who began the day in third, placed ninth at 5-under par after a round of 73. Whisman bested even Moore's 67 with a 6-under 66. However, Whisman played as an individual, and his total did not count toward the Rebels' team effort.

The Rebels improved to 13-6, while the Tigers fell to 3-7. Jake Vose (3-3) pitched six shutout innings, giving up only two hits and striking out nine. Adam Lesko and Ryan Braun each threw a hitless inning in relief. Patrick Dobson extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Lektorich, a senior, won the javelin title with a UNLV career-best throw of 145 feet, 8 inches, which surpassed the NCAA standard. Ladouceur, a sophomore, placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.89 seconds.

Senior Tianika Sharrieff also took top honors in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.

The only winner for the Rebels (1-6) was Joel Kielbowicz at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-3, over Chad Tsuda.
