Forest Service maps off-road vehicle trails

Monday, March 10, 2003 | 9:28 a.m.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to leave open all existing, but unofficial, trails for motor vehicles in the Spring Mountains west of Las Vegas, unless the roads enter wilderness areas, officials have announced.

For years, operators of four-wheel-drive vehicles have used unofficial trails throughout the mountains.

District Ranger Steve Holdsambeck, said it is part of a plan to develop a system of trails in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area,

"The goal is to develop a motorized trail system that provides four-wheel drive and off-highway vehicle experiences while protecting the mountain's environment," Holdsambeck said.

The Forest Service estimates that off-road vehicle use is growing about 15 percent annually in Southern Nevada.

The Forest Service will determine which trails to leave open after hearing public comment on the issue, project team leader Connie Moen said.

"Keep in mind that what is outlined in the proposed action is only a proposal, not a final decision," Moen said.

Information including maps, a comment form and the proposed action has been mailed to more than 700 citizens and groups.

Detailed maps may be viewed from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Forest Service Office, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive.
