Education audit called needed tool

Thursday, March 6, 2003 | 9:43 a.m.

Lawmakers moved a step closer Wednesday to ordering a performance audit of the Clark County and Washoe County school districts, calling it a necessary tool for ensuring education dollars are being wisely spent.

"At a time when we're looking for new revenue to improve education, we have to make sure every dollar produces the results we expect," said Assemblyman David Goldwater, D-Las Vegas, who proposed the audit bill to the Assembly Education Committee.

While Clark County School District officials have said in the past they welcomed the audit, no one from the schools spoke during Wednesday's brief discussion.

A revised version of the bill is expected to come back for further discussion later this month, and could include an amendment to extend the audits to all school districts with more than 5,000 pupils.

Plans also moved ahead for an audit of the University and Community College System of Nevada, as proposed by Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson. The audit would focus on whether class offerings were sufficient to meet need, whether there was unnecessary duplication and other issues.
