Tribe set to purchase Grand Traverse Resort

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Praise and criticism accompanied news of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians' purchase today of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
Some area officials wonder whether the tribe will attempt to move its nearby Turtle Creek Casino operation into the Acme-based resort, while others say the band's sovereign-nation status provides it unfair competitive advantage in the region's tourism industry.
Douglas Luciani, president of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, said the tribe's purchase could bode well for the resort's future.
"This type of amenity keeps Traverse City on the leading edge in the travel and tourism industry," he told the Traverse City Record-Eagle. "That property needs someone with a commitment to do it right, and the band has the ability to do it."
The tribe, which also owns the Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown, announced today it had purchased the long-troubled resort from KSL Recreation Inc., of LaQuinta, Calif., for an undisclosed price.
