Letter: Board’s prayer ruling is unfair
Wednesday, March 5, 2003 | 9:07 a.m.
When I read that some Clark County School Board members voted against complying with federal rules about prayers at graduation ceremonies I was thoroughly disgusted.
Our Constitution clearly states that we should abide by the rule of separation of church and state. The board members refused to listen to sound advice by legal authorities and thus put in jeopardy our children's education. Their remarks have the odor of religious bigotry and that is indecent and unfair. I guess they do not know that we are a multi-ethnic society of various beliefs.
If some people want prayers and benedictions at a graduation ceremony, this announcement could be made: "We grant all of you (so many minutes) of silence to express your individual feelings about this momentous occasion for all of our children." This is a day belonging to the students. Let us make all of them and their families happy.
