2 women killed, 1 hurt in shooting

Wednesday, March 5, 2003 | 11:14 a.m.

Two women are dead and another was wounded early today in a bizarre shooting incident that may have stemmed from a domestic dispute, Metro Police said today.

Police responded to a cell phone call shortly after 2 a.m. from a woman who told police that a man and woman were arguing.

The call went dead while Metro dispatched units to a remote area of Decatur Boulevard at Lone Grove Road, about a mile and a half north of Blue Diamond Road in the southwest part of the valley.

Officers reportedly found a couple of chairs and a lamp in the roadway and began searching the desert area nearby. About a half-hour later, "all of a sudden we discovered someone had a gunshot wound," Metro spokesman Jose Montoya said.

A woman shooting victim stumbled out of a desert area at Robindale Road and Decatur, police said.

Officers then found two other women nearby who had also been shot, Montoya said. All of the shooting victims appear to be of Asian descent, police said.

One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two other shooting victims were taken to University Medical Center.

One of the victims, a 23-year-old who had suffered a gunshot wound in her head, was pronounced dead at 4:13 a.m., UMC spokesman Rick Plummer said.

The second woman, also 23, was in critical condition this morning with gunshot wounds in her head and hands, Plummer said.

The names of the victims had not been released by authorities this morning.

Police said they want to find and question 33-year-old Alfonso "Slinky" Blake. He had been staying at a two-story house in the 4700 block of Thackerville Avenue, near where the victims were found, police said. Blake, a black man who is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 190 pounds, is believed to be driving a black Ford Expedition, police said.

Police searched the Thackerville house about 8 a.m. this morning. The garage was open and a beige sport utility vehicle was inside. A woman and some children were at the house when the search warrant was served, but police said they had no reason to believe they had anything to do with the shooting.

The property manager for that house, Dennis Flescher, said he had rented the year-old home in May to two sisters, ages 23 and 33, who had children.

"I haven't had any problems like this before," Flescher said.

James Webb has lived about a block away from the house for a year and said he liked the neighborhood because "it's nice and quiet."

"Nothing surprises me in Las Vegas," Webb, a lifelong resident of the city, said.

"But for something like this to happen here," he added, then just shook his head.
