Bill targets schools without discipline plan for children

CARSON CITY -- School principals would be docked pay for failing to enforce a state law on disruptive students, under a bill introduced Friday by Assembly Democrats.
Assembly Bill 218, sponsored by Wendell Williams, D-North Las Vegas, would withhold a principal's pay for each day his or her school fails to comply with a law requiring schools to enact a plan for the progressive discipline of pupils.
Williams said teachers often complain about unruly students.
"Sometimes they'll refer kids to the office and the kids beat them back to the classroom," Williams said.
The measure is part of the Assembly Democratic leadership's goals for passage in the first 45 days of the session.
AB218 was referred to the Assembly Education Committee.
