Spending rises modestly

WASHINGTON -- Consumers kept close watch on their purse strings and nudged up their spending in May by 0.1 percent for the second month in a row, the Commerce Department reported today.
Also, U.S. consumer confidence fell less than expected this month as stock prices rose and interest rates fell, a University of Michigan survey found.
