Letter: Legislators must make the needed budget cuts now
Tuesday, June 24, 2003 | 9:09 a.m.
When will Gov. Kenny Guinn realize that Nevada cannot be all things to all people. When does the government's greed adversely affect the lives of the residents of our state? I say now is the time to decide that the taxpayers are not an endless source of funds for programs that are neither cost-efficient or in the best interest of the people of Nevada.
The Legislature and local governments are very efficient at spending money when it is someone else paying the bill. They are not good at cutting programs that are not affordable or create a legacy for our representatives in Carson City. I applaud the assemblymen and assemblywomen who realize that the government must rein in expenses and look realistically at what can be trimmed in the budget.
We all must balance our budgets and cut expenses when funds are low. I do not have the luxury of tapping someone else's bank account. Open the budget and make the needed cuts. Trim the administration of the Clark County School District. Cut out the increase in welfare. Make the people of this state pay their own way. Make government do what it is allowed to do by the original intent of the state and federal Constitutions. Those are reforms worth fighting for.
