Letter: Effects of Bush’s bad policies will last generations
Friday, June 20, 2003 | 6 a.m.
President Bush signed the highly touted No Child Left Behind Act on Jan. 8, 2002. The Republicans hailed this as the solution to all of the nation's educational problems. Fast forward to 2003. One only has to listen to the latest news or go to a website that looks at school budgets to see what is really happening. State after state, school district after school district is struggling with the budgetary issues of maintaining some semblance of an educational system because of a lack of funds.
President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress passed the two tax bills that reduced the federal income and said they would have to offset the tax cut with spending cuts. The end result has been less money to the states from the federal government, which in the past has helped the states meet their obligations. Nevada has yet to settle on its state budget, but surely when finalized the educational system, which is already considered one of the worst, will suffer further cuts with a direct impact on our school system.
The No Child Left Behind Act is only one example of policies that have not been thought through by this administration. Wake up America, smell the roses or better yet the stench coming from Washington. The negative effects of these policies will be felt for generations. Everything from a gigantic national debt to the environment and finally an under-educated population.
