The state Board of Regents unanimously voted Thursday for freshmen board members Stavros Anthony as chairman and Marcia Bandera as vice chairwoman.
Anthony and Bandera will take their one-year positions July 1 on the 13-member board that oversees the University and Community College System of Nevada.
Chairman Douglas Seastrand and Vice Chairwoman Thalia Dondero finish their terms June 30.
After 15 years as an instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Anthony was elected to the board of regents in November. He resigned from his teaching duties after his election.
He serves on the board's Academic, Research and Student Affairs Committee, Finance Committee and the ad hoc Committee on Estate Tax.
Anthony is a Metro Police captain in the Northeast Area Command and is a 22-year veteran of the force. A graduate of the FBI National Academy, he holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University, a master's in political science and a doctorate in sociology from UNLV.
Bandera was appointed to the board in 2002, filling the post of Dorothy Gallagher, and sits on the board's Academic, Research and Student Affairs Committee, Finance and Planning Committee and the Executive Compensation and Evaluation Committee.
Bandera is a former superintendent of the Elko County School District and is currently an education consultant. She holds a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's in educational administration-educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno.
The university system serves 90,000 students. It includes two doctoral-granting universities, one state college, four community colleges and one research institute.
