Letter: School, water issues solvable
Friday, June 6, 2003 | 9:30 a.m.
I have a simple solution to big problems such as the school district budget and the concerns about a lack of water due to the drought. The simple solution is to think ahead.
Our city fathers had to see these problems coming years ago. However, they never made any great effort to get a handle on them. The steps they are taking now to cut back on water use should have been started 20 years ago.
As far as the school district goes, many of the programs they now have should never have been started. They need to get back to basics -- teach students how to read and they can learn for themselves.
And what about these designer schools with all the fancy architecture that's good for nothing but to look at? What's more important -- fancy schools or decent pay for the teachers and more money for school equipment that's really necessary?
