Letter: Moncrief victory sends a message
Thursday, June 5, 2003 | 9:09 a.m.
Despite the fact that she was outspent tenfold, nurse Janet Moncrief has now twice defeated incumbent councilman Mike McDonald. Although Ms. Moncrief appears to be a sincere and well-meaning individual, surely her election sends a message that the Las Vegas electorate is fed up with ethically challenged office holders.
It should be a top priority for Nevada to institute an ethics bill with teeth. So many of our politicians are brought up on ethics charges, only to receive a slap on the wrist. It seems to be the norm for Las Vegas city "leaders" to be employed by the least reputable businesses in town.
The time of seeking office and then auctioning off your services to the highest bidder is hopefully coming to an end. That is the real lesson of the Moncrief landslide. Let Nevada politicos ignore this at their own risk.
