Guinn to back GOP candidate

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will continue to "have a strong working relationship" with Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn, despite Guinn's intention to endorse Reid's GOP challenger in next year's election.

Tessa Hafen, press secretary for Reid, said he was surprised to read in the newspaper that Guinn will not back Nevada's senior senator in the 2004 election.

Marybel Batjer, chief of staff for Guinn, said it would be a "little incongruous" for Guinn, the leader of the GOP in Nevada, to back Reid, who is head of the Nevada Democratic Party.

The governor will support the Republican candidate against Reid in the election next year, Batjer said.

Asked if Guinn would support Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., if he goes against Reid, Batjer said the governor and Gibbons have a lot in common despite their differences over the state's budget issues.

Gibbons, in a speech to the Legislature, criticized the Guinn tax plan earlier this year.

"Jim Gibbons and Dawn (Gibbons) are good friends of the Guinns," Batjer said. The disagreement over the budget does "not mean they are at cross purposes."
