Letter: Driver’s license means freedom
Wednesday, July 30, 2003 | 8:39 a.m.
The recent tragedies at farmers markets involving older drivers have raised questions about the ability of oldsters to drive. Before we take any serious step, however, we must look at the overall picture.
I am a 90-year-old writer who has written and had published within the past two years five short stories in small magazines. I am writing a novel based on my 34 years of living in Las Vegas. Although I am mentally alert, I drive only when necessary.
To misquote the bard: "Who steals my purse steals trash but he who takes away my license to drive may be enriched but makes me poor indeed."
When you arbitrarily take away my license to drive, you are also taking away my freedom of choice, an American tradition.
