Movies on demand launched on Vegas cable system

Cox Communications is rolling out "Entertainment on Demand" (EOD) technology in Las Vegas enabling customers to electronically "rent" movies and watch them anytime -- and then watch them again and again over a 24-hour period.
"It provides all the functionality of a VCR tape," said Cox spokesman Tony Timmons, explaining customers can rewind and fast-forward the movies at-will.
In Business Las Vegas, a sister newspaper to the Las Vegas Sun, reported EOD is a digital cable service currently available to about a third of Cox's Las Vegas customers, all of whom live in the east side of the valley.
The system -- based on Video on Demand technology rolling out in cable systems around the country -- is expected to be available to all of Cox's Las Vegas customers by the end of the year. Newer moves on the system typically rent for $3.95, older films are less expensive.
The Greenspun family, owner of the Las Vegas Sun, is a minority investor in Cox's Las Vegas cable system.
