Letter: Business taxes are fair for all

Monday, July 28, 2003 | 8:46 a.m.

There is a myth businesses do not pay taxes. Businesses do pay tax and pass this tax on to their customers in the form of increased prices. They can only pass this tax on to the people who use their services or products, not to the general population.

Their customers pay the tax in direct proportion to the amount of business they do with the taxed business. If I use a service or product of a taxed business, I will pay the tax, otherwise I will pay no additional tax. Only the people who do business with the taxed business are taxed.

This allows all individuals to decide if they want to pay the tax simply by choosing what service or product they need. A man who cuts his own grass should not pay tax for a man who uses a lawn service. If you don't want to pay the tax, cut your own grass. The tax becomes voluntary, as you have a choice of either to pay it or not to pay it -- simply by not using the service. What is unfair about this?
