Letter: Obstructionists should take cue from children

Friday, July 25, 2003 | 5:01 a.m.

I teach kindergarten at Moore Elementary. We are a Title 1, at-risk school. Our school community works each day to meet the needs of our kids. Students at Moore Elementary come to school each day to learn and to achieve daily success in their education. They are just as important as the gifted students. Their parents value their children's education and work with us as part of our community family.

Assemblyman Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, appears to struggle with the concept of working together to meet the needs of our community family. Our kids know school is where they go to learn and work together. Beers could learn a lot from our kids. Maybe, while in Carson City, he could learn to work cooperatively in a group and stop playing to the media.

Meanwhile, I will continue to go to school each day to work with my kids, my peers and my administrator. Beers could learn a great deal if he could only stop talking to his mirror and start listening to his community. Our kids deserve adequate funding for their education. They have earned that right. I am proud to be a teacher and I love working with kids. My reality is doing my best for my kids every day. It is also working to earn enough to maintain a single-parent household.

What is your reality, Mr. Beers? Have you been to school lately?
