The top-water action for striped bass continues to improve as the fish have moved to Lake Mead's surface where they are feeding on this year's crop of threadfin shad.
Early-morning boaters have been catching stripers from Las Vegas Wash to Black Island to Hatchery Cove. The 33 Hole and Sand Island have been productive areas for stripers.
Anglers have been using Kastmasters, surface plugs and live shad to catch the fish. Most of the stripers have been healthy and have ranged from 16-24 inches with the average fish being around 18 inches.
Walt deMattos, NDOW creel census clerk, said two anglers who were fishing Monday morning at the Meadows in the Overton Arm caught 40 stripers. He also said that largemouth bass fishing has been very good in coves near Overton Beach Marina and at the islands around Echo Bay.
Stripers continue to be caught above and below Cottonwood Cove by boaters who are drifting with anchovies and squid. Several stripers in the 5-pound range have been caught during the past week in that area.
