UNLV opener switched to Friday for TV audience
Thursday, July 24, 2003 | 8:38 a.m.
If UNLV is still looking for a theme for the 2003 football season, it might want to try this one:
"Friday Night Lights."
The school announced Wednesday that it's season opener with Toledo, originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30 at Sam Boyd Stadium, has been moved up a day to Friday, Aug. 29, so that it can be nationally televised by ESPN.
The game, which will kick off at 6 p.m., marks the second contest to be moved to Friday night this season for national TV. Previously, UNLV's game with Hawaii was moved up a day to Sept. 19 so that it can be shown on ESPN2.
UNLV has played four previous times on Friday night, with the last one on Sept. 7, 2001 when the Rebels lost to Northwestern, 37-28, at Sam Boyd Stadium. UNLV is 2-1-1 in Friday night contests.
UNLV will now begin fall camp workouts a day earlier on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Rebel Park. The Rebels' first practice in pads will be on Saturday, Aug. 9. A scrimmage at Sam Boyd Stadium is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16.
