Two killed in accidents identified

Monday, July 21, 2003 | 11:08 a.m.

Authorities have released the names of two people who were killed in traffic accidents last week.

The man who was struck and killed by a North Las Vegas police car Friday was 41-year-old Manuel Acosta of Los Angeles, police said today. And the 56-year-old woman who died a three-car crash Thursday on Interstate 15 North near Apex has been identified as Linda Jean Rogers of Berkley, CA.

Acosta was not using a crosswalk on Lake Mead Boulevard near Eastern Avenue when he was hit by a patrol car that was responding to call about a prowler about 2:20 a.m. Friday.

The officer who was driving the car, Adam Hyde, has been with the department for two years. He was not injured. Hyde is on routine paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed.

Hyde was not using his police siren or lights when he struck Acosta, police said.

Toxicology reports have not been completed yet, Officer Justin Roberts, North Las Vegas police spokesman, said.

In Rogers' case, she was a passenger in a Toyota driven by her 17-year-old daughter, authorities said. The teen was injured but is in stable condition.

Investigators said the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. when the Toyota drifted from the left lane into the median. The teen overcorrected and hit a northbound Chevrolet in the center lane. That sent both cars spinning and crashing into the right retainer wall with the Toyota cartwheeling over the Chevrolet.

The Toyota then hit a Nevada Highway Patrol vehicle that was parked in the emergency lane while a trooper was helping a California family whose station wagon had broken down there. The trooper's hand was cut by flying debris.
