Letter: Ruling is result of voting apathy
Monday, July 21, 2003 | 8:48 a.m.
The Nevada Supreme Court, in setting aside the two-thirds majority rule, failed to listen to the will of the people. I would hope the decision by six justices to nullify the constitution's requirement for a two-thirds majority in the Legislature to pass tax increases would lead us to band together and toss them out of their robes.
Our governor should follow right behind them so that we send a message that we have had enough political games. Those whom we elect need to understand the reason that they are in office -- to serve the will of the people, not to rule those who have entrusted them to serve.
Citizens who have failed to vote in each and every election have allowed this sort of behavior to become the norm. Continue to ignore this sort of behavior and you will soon lose the lifestyle you have in Nevada. Tax and waste will continue to grow, as will regulations that will control your life and the lives of your children. Personal freedom cannot survive if you are not willing to stand up and demand that our elected officials protect our rights rather than vote to remove them.
