Banks scores 22 in Celtics victory
Marcus Banks and Brandon Hunter made the Boston Celtics' draft-day strategy look good Thursday, combining for 48 points in a Reebok Pro Summer League victory, 96-78, against the New York Knicks.
Banks, a UNLV graduate, scored 22 points and totaled 10 assists, while Hunter, a second-round draft choice from Ohio University, had 26 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Police would not reveal what Carlton Dotson, Dennehy's former teammate, told Maryland authorities Thursday. Dotson went to Dorchester County Sheriff's Office near his hometown and said he wanted to discuss Dennehy's disappearance.
Moore eliminated
Defending champion Ryan Moore of UNLV was eliminated in the second round of the USGA Men's Amateur Publinks championships at Galloway, N.J. Moore lost, 4 and 3, to Brandt Snedeker of Nashville, Tenn.
Rose 'cleared'
A jury sitting in mock judgment of Pete Rose decided Thursday that baseball's career hits leader should be eligible for the Hall of Fame, even though most of the jurors think he bet on baseball. The 8-4 vote was a victory for defense attorney Johnnie Cochran over prosecutor Alan Dershowitz in the ESPN event. Polled later, 11 of the 12 jurors said they believed that Rose bet on baseball.
China 1-2 in diving
Xu Xiang took the gold and his Chinese teammate Wang Kenan won the silver Thursday in the men's 1-meter springboard final at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain. The top-two finish gave China seven medals, one behind leader Russia.
In synchronized swimming, Virginie Dedieu earned France's first medal of the championships, taking the solo competition.
Goalie pads limited
The NHL will limit the height of goalie pads next season for the first time ever, forcing about one-third of the league's goaltenders to change their equipment. The league is instituting a 38-inch limit on the length of goaltender pads. Previously, the only restriction was that the width not exceed 12 inches.
Smalls wins on points
Tiger Smalls (12-6-1) outpointed Mexico's Cristian Favela in a WBO Intercontinental featherweight title fight Thursday night at City of Industry, Calif.
