NASCAR dates set for Las Vegas weekend

Date were set Wednesday for the UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400, the largest annual sports event in Nevada, and its accompanying NASCAR events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The race, third stop on the 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup tour, will be March 7.

The Sam's Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series event will be Saturday, March 6. Qualifying for both events will be Friday, March 5.

The speedway also announced that the O'Reilly World of Outlaws series will return March 4-5.

NASCAR weekend tickets for the new 22,000-seat Dale Earnhardt Terrace are on sale by calling the speedway at (800) 644-4444 or online at www.lvms.com. All remaining seats will go on sale in September.

During the pre-race inspection on Sunday, NASCAR officials found that the rear suspension of the No. 29 Chevrolet driven by Harvick had "an unapproved travel limiting device."

Canadian wins diving

Canadian Emilie Heymans won the 10-meter platform Wednesday in the World Swimming Championships at Barcelona, Spain, after two favored Chinese competitors came up short in their final efforts. Heymans, who won silver in the 10-meter platform synchronized in the 2000 Olympics and gold in the 1999 Pan Am Games, edged Lao Lishi and Li Na. Heymans went into the final in fifth place. Li and Lao were leading the competition.

Moore advances

Defending champion Ryan Moore of UNLV won his opening match in the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship at Blue Heron Pines In Galloway Township, N.J. Moore rallied to beat Zack King, 3 and 2.

USOC tries 'reality'

The U.S. Olympic Committee will announce today that it will create a reality television series, in which camera crews will follow up to 20 American athletes as they try to make the team for next year's Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

River course in Reno

Reno City Council voted Wednesday to begin construction next month on a $1.5 million whitewater park and kayak slalom racing course on the Truckee River.

Boughner traded

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Bob Boughner from the Calgary Flames for a fourth-round pick in the 2004 draft. Boughner, who is signed through 2003-04, will make $2.3 million.
