Savvy wine buys: Beyerskloof ‘00 Pinotage Stellenbosch
Wednesday, July 16, 2003 | 8:26 a.m.
The controversial Pinotage varietal has been synonymous with South African wine making for ages. It's a cross between the pinot noir and cinsaut grapes, and when it is good, as in the case of this beautifully priced winner, it is very good, (although when it is bad, it has an off-putting, bitter finish.) Beyers Truiter is considered the grand old man of Pinotage at the moment, and this example of his work, deeply flavorful, redolent of dark fruit and exotically dry, makes a fine match for a wide variety of foods.
Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $5.99.
