Letter: Raising business tax shortsighted

Wednesday, July 16, 2003 | 9:02 a.m.

I am writing about the Nevada Legislature ruling and the proposed business tax increase. What else is at stake? Has anyone determined the potential negative impacts upon businesses, the local economy and image of Nevada as being a business- friendly state? Initially, 0.1 percent doesn't seem like much, but a gross receipts tax could make Nevada the highest-taxed state in the country!

What kind of incentive is this going to be for big companies to come to this town? In addition, there are large numbers of businesses who have a high gross and very little net profit.

In some cases, this tax will actually be more than their net profits. It seems like the Legislature is more interested in trying to do a "quick fix" and appease the casinos than a thoughtful plan for Nevada's future.

And, in regard to the schools, recently it was reported that Nevada came in close to last in terms of reading skills for the fourth grade -- only Washington, D.C., is lower. It seems that the school system wants more money with less consideration as to whether the system is working.

For the sake of our children and future, it is time for creative practical solutions to this budget crisis, not more political games and maneuverings by politicians and casinos, who seem to want everyone else to foot the bills.
